by Cesar Balajadia (August 18, 2005)
The Bureau of Postharvest Research and Extension (BPRE) in collaboration with the representatives of Congressional Districts, Local Government Units (LGUs), Department of Agriculture-Regional Field Units (DA-RFUs) and the National Agriculture and Fishery Council (NAFC) turned over more postharvest facilities in Regions 6 and 7 to support the postharvest agri-fishery development in the area.

Through the support of the DA, a trading post and three multi-purpose drying pavements were turned over to Mayor Osias Flor and three barangay chairmen of Trinidad, Bohol on April 21 and 28, 2005, respectively.

The agricultural tramline was also turned over to Mayor Juanito Alipao of Alimodian, Iloilo on April 29, 2005. Through the initiatives of Congressman Buboy Syjuco, the tramline is expected to benefit farmers in the seven barangays of Alimodian by saving on the hauling cost of their vegetables from the farm to the nearest service roads. It will also ensure timely delivery of quality produce to the market.

In the same turn-over ceremony, Mayor Alipao also received from the DA-RFU 6 a greenhouse and cold room storage.

Other postharvest facilities turned-over in San Rafael and San Dionisio, Iloilo on May 5, 2005 include 280 units of tarpaulin, 1 unit livestock auction market, 1 unit Municipal Level Grain Center (MLGC) and 1 unit of diversion dam. Mayor Ronnie Balasico of San Rafael, Iloilo received the auction market, diversion dam, MLGC and 140 units of tarpaulin. Meanwhile, Mayor Villanueva of San Dionisio received 140 tarpaulin units for distribution to various barangays in his municipality.

The livestock auction market and the tarpaulin units were installed and turned over through the support of the Japanese Government and the NAFC. This auction market is expected to boost livestock trading in the area, giving beneficiaries 30% savings in terms of transportation cost, time saved and less weight loss during transport.
