The Bureau of Postharvest Research and Extension (BPRE) in collaboration with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) is conducting the Third Country Training on Rice Postharvest Technology and Extension Methodologies at BPRE headquarters in the Science City of Muñoz from November 4-23, 2007.
Technical staff at the central and provincial level of Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) and Ministry of Industry, Mines and Energy (MIME) in Cambodia participated in the training. After finishing the training course they will serve as trainers of Cambodia's agricultural extension services specifically on rice postharvest technology.
His Excellency In May, ambassador of Cambodia to the Philippines was represented by Mr. Tith Sarunreth, minister counsellor of the Royal Embassy of Cambodia and Mr. Kenzo Iwakami, deputy resident representative of JICA in the country was represented by Ms. Masami Bolt. They graced the opening program of the training on November 5, 2007.
Ms. Bolt encouraged the participants to keep an open mind and share in the activities so that everyone will go home enriched with knowledge and skills. She also expressed appreciation to BPRE for putting effort and dedication to materialize the activity.
Bolt also assured that JICA will help the government of Cambodia in empowering their agriculture sector through the TCTP. She called everyone to join hands in building a better tomorrow.
The training aims to enhance the technical capability of the staff on postharvest technology. It also intends to increase the knowledge of participants on the cause and prevention of postharvest losses; guide the participants in formulating their respective action plans; and discuss the strategies in mentoring and coaching to effectively implement their action plans for their region/ province.
There are three modules of the training course. These include an overview of postharvest, fundamentals of postharvest, and extension methodologies and approaches. Study tours, and field visits will also be conducted during the implementation of the activity.
A pool of experts from BPRE was tapped to serve as resource persons during the conduct of the training. Other invited speakers were from different agencies, and state college and universities like the National Food Authority, Philippine Rice Research Institute, Central Luzon State University, and the University of the Philippines at Los Baños.
