PHilMech upskills Agusan coconut farmers
by Vina D. Pallar (October 29, 2024)
To enhance the coconut water processing industry, the Philippine Center for Postharvest Development and Mechanization (PHilMech) through its Technology Management and Training Division (TMTD) under the Coconut Farmers and Industry Development Plan (CFIDP) conducted an extensive three-day Skills Training on the Operation and Maintenance of Coconut Water Processing Facility in Jabonga, Agusan del Norte, on October 23-25, 2024.

In collaboration with the Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA) CARAGA, Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) CARAGA, and the SUKI Trading Corporation, this initiative aims to empower local coconut farmers with the knowledge and skills to efficiently operate and maintain coconut water processing facilities.

Such efforts are vital in creating more opportunities for local communities. By fostering a skilled workforce, the training is expected to contribute significantly to developing the coconut industry in the CARAGA Region.

Ernalyn Colon, Coconut Production and Regulation Officer III (CPRO III) PCA–CARAGA emphasized the importance of this initiative, “Mahalaga ang pagsasagawa ng ganitong initiative because it will serve as orientation, training, and awareness on the development and project of the coconut industry (The initiative is significant as it will serve as orientation, training, and awareness regarding the development and projects within the coconut industry).”

The training activity provided participants with lectures on the status of the coconut food production industry in the country, good manufacturing practices and food safety, production of beverages from coconut water, and the coconut water processing system. It was essential for the participants in order to be educated on quality control measures and the importance of maintaining high-hygiene standards to ensure product safety and marketability.

The participants also underwent hands-on experience in operating and maintaining modern coconut water processing equipment. This covered all aspects of coconut water processing; attendees observed and identified the parts and functions of the machinery and operated it first-hand, from coconut dehairing machine, washing bin, coconut water extraction, pasteurizer machine, bottling to storage or freezing of the final product.

Irene Morales, manager of Libas Multipurpose Cooperative, expressed her appreciation for the hands-on experience and the opportunity to learn from industry experts. She said the training enhanced their technical skills and provided insights into best practices and innovative techniques in coconut water processing.

Engr. Remellie Hermoso, supervising science research specialist of TMTD expressed, “Keep striving at andito lang kami para suportahan at tulungan kayo… at ang sikreto sa tagumpay ng event na ito ay ang pagtutulungan (Continue to strive, and we are here to support and assist you… the key to the success of this event lies in collaboration).” This sentiment implies the collaboration among PHilMech, PCA, DTI CARAGA, and SUKI Trading Corporation. Also, it underscores the commitment to strengthen the coconut industry by equipping local stakeholders with the necessary skills and knowledge.

With the successful completion of this training program, there are plans to expand similar initiatives to other regions, further enhancing the capabilities of coconut farmers across the Philippines. The ultimate goal is to transform the local coconut industry into a more vibrant and sustainable sector that can contribute to the national economy.
