PHilMech joins the celebration of World Food Day 2024
by Mary Ann Rose C. Gonzales (October 17, 2024)
PHilMech took part in the global celebration of World Food Day at Quezon City Memorial Circle on October 16, 2024. The event focused on transforming food systems to ensure that everyone can access nutritious, affordable, and sustainable diets. It also underscored the urgent need for food security as a means to tackle malnutrition and protect the environment.

This year’s theme, “Right to Food for a Better Life and a Better Future: Leave No One Behind,” aimed to unite various stakeholders in developing inclusive solutions that benefit everyone, from farmers to consumers. The initiative brings people together to make sure all voices are heard while working on better agricultural practices and fair food distribution.

Senator Cynthia A. Villar, Chairperson of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Food, and Agrarian Reform, emphasized that food should be viewed as a basic human right rather than a privilege. She advocates for universal access to nutritious food and believes that by collaborating with farmers, policymakers, and communities, it is possible to build a world without hunger.

Mr. Lionel Henri Valentin Dabbadie, the Country Representative for the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO-UN), remarked that access to nutritious food is essential for people to thrive and reach their full potential. He stated, “By coming together to uphold the right to food, we can enhance their quality of life and secure a brighter future. Sama sama natin makakamit ang mundong walang gutom.”

The event also honored the finalists of the 2024 Department of Agriculture Search for Outstanding Rural Women. These women play important roles in promoting food security and empowering their communities, and their contributions were celebrated as essential to building a stronger, more resilient future for everyone.

A candle-lighting ceremony marked the declaration of the 2024 World Food Day Pledge, where participants expressed their commitment to improving food security initiatives. A key part of the pledge emphasized the importance of helping farmers embrace modern technology and training to enhance their lives: “Tutulong ako para buksan ang kaisipan ng mga magsasaka sa makabagong teknolohiya at pagsasanay, para mapabuti ang kalagayan ng kanilang buhay.”

This commitment aligns closely with PHilMech’s mission to support farmers. By offering targeted training and essential resources, PHilMech seeks to empower farmers and enhance their livelihoods. This support is designed to help them adapt and thrive in today’s agricultural landscape, ensuring they have the tools and knowledge needed for success.

The event is organized by the Department of Agriculture in collaboration with the FAO-UN.
