SUCCESS STORIES

The Baul Family and the MCSTD
by Helen F. Martinez (March 12, 2015)
Mr. Remegio and Mrs. Corazon Baul of Floridablanca, Pampanga established the Remzon’s Organic Products and Deli Shop (also known as Remzon's) in 2006. It all began when their eldest son, Daniel Baul, a seminarian then who stayed with an Italian priest for 10 years, taught his father the basics of growing organic basil. He also encouraged his sisters to process dried basil, pesto and other sauces.

Before, Remzon’s big problem was their inability to meet increasing demand of Remzon's products. The lack of facilities like dryer and tea bag maker brought about this problem. There is also the problemof poor quality dried basil leaves.

Through the recommendation of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), the Baul family bought and used the PHilMech-developed Multi-Commodity Solar Tunnel Dryer (MCSTD). Because drying was made easier and more hygienic, the Baul family increased their income and profit. They also expanded their product lines, to wit: Holy Basil Tea, Holy Basil Wine, Guyabano Tea, Chili Sauce, Pesto Sauce and Dried Tomato in Olive Oil. The use of the MCSTD also brought employment to the people in the community.

As a result, the Remzon's Organic Products and Deli Shop received recognition as One Town One Product(OTOP)Small and Medium-Scale Enterprise for basil in Floridablanca, Pampanga.
