by Erwin S. Embuscado (November 8, 2010)
MANILA, Philippines- The Philippines and the South Korea will establish a $790,000 corn processing center in Isabela to improve the productivity of the corn farmers in the province through the use of appropriate postproduction technologies and systems.

This was revealed by Ricardo L. Cachuela, director of the Philippine Center for Postharvest Development and Mechanization (PHilMech) during the signing of the records of discussion here.

`We are very grateful to the Korean government for the help they extend to the Filipino farmers. This is the product of the cooperation and long time friendship between the Philippines and the Republic of Korea,` Cachuela said.

The Korea Rural Economic Institute (KREI) will fund the project which will address the needs for agricultural and rural development in the country through increased agricultural output and enhanced local community capacity.

Meanwhile, Raul R. Paz, director for Extension Support, Education and Training Services (ESETS) of PHilMech said the operation of the corn processing center for the first two years will be supervised by Korean experts, PHilMech and the Department of Agriculture-Regional Field Unit (DA-RFU).

`The KREI is promoting rural development and they are looking for projects with great impact to the community,` Paz said.

The records of discussion were signed by Cachuela who represented Agriculture Undersecretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat and Dr. Yong-Taek Kim, director of the Center for International Agricultural Development Cooperation of the Korea Rural Economic Institute (KREI) on the part of the Korean government.

The project which will be implemented by PHilMech covers the establishment of a corn processing center, two multi-purpose warehouses and a community center.

The corn processing center will include technologies like corn sheller, corn dryer, storage and bulk handling system. The multi-purpose warehouse will be used as machinery shed and grain storage. The community center, on the other hand will be used during the conduct of trainings and other related activities.

The Korean government will dispatch Korean experts to the Philippines to supervise and provide necessary technical guidance to ensure the success of the project.

On the other hand, local officials and experts with background on rural development, corn production and post-production will also join the seminar-workshops to enhance their technical skills.
