Philippines, AFACI’s most outstanding partner
by Jett Molech G. Subaba (December 13, 2016)
The Asian Food and Agriculture Cooperation Initiative (AFACI) recognized the Philippines as the “Most Outstanding Country”, among its international partners, for its remarkable contribution and effort in the implementation of the AFACI’s cassava project for 2015.

This was achieved through the efforts of the Philippine Center for Postharvest Development and Mechanization (PHilMech), implementing AFACI’s regional project on “Enhancing the Agricultural Mechanization of Crop Production and Postharvest Processing of Cassava.” This project was spearheaded by Dr. Romualdo C. Martinez, division chief of PHilMech’s Agricultural Mechanization Division.

The AFACI’s cassava projects aim to improve cassava production by mechanization, reduction of postharvest losses and development of postharvest processing technologies, and by establishing a network among Asian countries.

Philippines is one of their eight country partners in the cassava project including Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Vietnam and Korea.

The AFACI is an inter-governmental and multi-lateral cooperation body aiming to improve food production, realize sustainable agriculture and enhance extension service of Asian countries by sharing knowledge and information on agricultural technology.

The AFACI is composed of 14 member countries, namely: Bangladesh, Cambodia, Lao PDR, Indonesia, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Nepal, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Vietnam, Korea, Bhutan and Myanmar. Their membership started in 2016.
