The Planning and Evaluation Department of BPRE conducted its Annual Planning Conference on Oct. 10-13, 2007 at the Boracay Courtyard Resort in Boracay, Aklan. It was attended by all staff of the department headed by its Director II, Dr. Gloria P. Jimenez.
Through this conference, the PED staff were apprised on updates regarding the Rationalization Plan of BPRE particularly the implications to PED of the proposed BPRE Rationalized Organizational Structure. The department also discussed updated manpower development program for the next five years and the agreements on the timetable of said manpower development.
Recently, BPRE entered into a Memorandum of Agreement with Taytay sa Kauswagan, Inc. (TSKI) in support to the Department of Agriculture's implementation of the Agri-Fishery Microfinance Program, a micro-financing scheme for farmers to increase the amount of credit support to priority commodities and special priority zones.
As the technical support department of BPRE, the PED staff visited the TSKI office to keep abreast of the top five priorities of the agriculture sector and help the farmers have access to loans from micro-financing institutions at an easier repayment scheme.

Mr. Richie Apaitan, Area Manager of TSKI for Region 6 oriented the PED group on the milestones of TSKI at their training center in Ecovillage Resort.
Taytay sa Kauswagan, Inc. whose motto is "Bridging the gap between poverty and progress", is a non-stock, non-profit Christian development organization with main office at Iloilo City, Iloilo. It was founded by Mr. Jose Tajanlangit and registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission on Sept. 1, 1986. Although microfinance is mainly intended for the entrepreneurial poor located mostly in urban areas and with daily incomes, TSKI innovated on this concept. It came up with a Community-Based Enterprise Development Program which joins all levels of poverty groups in the community to work together on an enterprise that is managed by the entrepreneurial poor while the ultra poor participates as laborers. Thus, everyone shares in the profits.
The PED sees this collaboration with TSKI as an opportunity for BPRE to participate in programs on poverty reduction particularly in helping the agriculture-dependent population of our country. BPRE could provide the necessary technologies which are products of the institute's research and development to the communities being assisted by TSKI. BPRE technologies could be the core of the community enterprises which will benefit the population.
To establish closer rapport among the PED staff, the group actively participated in a series of team-building activities that were fun and educational. All were delighted that conducting the planning activity in Boracay was all worth the time, effort and money. It was also an opportunity to appreciate the beauty of our country and its people.
