SUCCESS STORIES

From Ashes to Abundance: The Story of Diaspora Farm
by Jona T. Paulo (January 31, 2025)
Nearly 30 years after the 1991 Mt. Pinatubo eruption, Bacolor, Pampanga, has risen from devastation, transforming into a hub for business and farm tourism. One of its most inspiring success stories is Diaspora Farm, a testament to resilience and innovation. At the heart of its continued growth is its partnership with PHilMech, particularly through mango pectin technology, a breakthrough in postharvest management.

FROM DISASTER TO OPPORTUNITY

Founded by Annette Patdu, Diaspora Farm was born out of the idea of diaspora—the dispersion and return of people to their homeland. Her family's farm, once fertile, was buried under six meters of lahar after the eruption. In 2003, following her father’s passing, Annette and her husband, Agie, returned to rehabilitate the land, clearing lahar deposits and restoring soil fertility through organic practices. Over time, they expanded the farm to 2.5 hectares, focusing on mango production.

Despite their dedication, the short shelf life of fresh mangoes is one of their challenges. Postharvest losses, spoilage, and fluctuating market prices often threatened their profitability. However, a game-changing innovation from PHilMech would soon transform their operations and unlock new opportunities.

PHILMECH'S GAME-CHANGING MANGO PECTIN TECHNOLOGY

In 2023, Diaspora Farm discovered PHilMech’s mango pectin technology at the Agrilink trade fair, recognizing its potential to improve their operations. This innovation extends the shelf life of fresh mangoes by 12 to 24 days, whether stored at room temperature or under refrigeration. By preventing spoilage, it allows them to sell their produce for a longer period, reducing postharvest losses and increasing profitability.

With PHilMech’s training and technical support, Diaspora Farm swiftly integrated mango pectin applications into their postharvest process, ensuring higher-quality mangoes and greater market competitiveness. Beyond using mango pectin to preserve fresh mangoes, they also produce and sell mango pectin and mango jam, maximizing their harvest and increasing their income.

Taking sustainability a step further, Diaspora Farm processes mango peels to produce mango pectin, reducing waste while creating a valuable product. Their commitment to circular agriculture has even attracted Conti’s, one of the country’s largest and most well-known bakeshops, which now delivers mango peels to the farm for processing.

A MODEL FOR MODERN AGRIBUSINESS

Diaspora Farm Resort’s transformation from disaster-stricken land into a thriving agribusiness highlights the power of technology, education, and resilience. Through PHilMech’s mango pectin technology, the farm has successfully overcome postharvest challenges, securing better opportunities for growth.

"Natutuwa talaga ako napaka-receptive ng PHilMech sa mga kailangan namin, sa mga katulad naming nasa agribusiness. Kapag kinukuha akong resource person, nakikita ko talaga, sabi ko ang dami nating mature technology na pwede nating i-adopt, lalo na tayong nasa industry," Annette shares.

With the continued support of PHilMech and other agencies, Diaspora Farm remains committed to advancing agricultural innovation. As Philippine agriculture modernizes, more farming communities can adopt PHilMech’s technologies, proving that with the right tools, training, and determination, agribusiness can thrive.
