DA, BPRE extend 4 ref trucks
by Jerry James M. de la Torre (March 1, 2004)

Secretary Luis P. Lorenzo, Jr.
of the Department of Agriculture (DA) and Executive Director Ricardo L. Cachuela of the Bureau of Postharvest Research and Extension (BPRE), in a formal turn over rites recently at DA central office in Quezon City, awarded four units refrigerated trucks to the Benguet vegetable sector through Governor Raul Molintas.

These trucks form part of the National Cold Chain Program of DA which BPRE spearheads in collaboration with other line agencies. The three major pilot areas are Cagayan de Oro - Cebu - Manila, Visayas - Manila, and Benguet - Manila lines.

A cold chain system is an uninterrupted low-temperature handling of vegetables from farm to market. It consists of precoolers, packinghouse, refrigerated trucks, reefer van and cold storage facilities. It preserves the quality of produce, reduces losses and prolongs shelf-life. Vegetables that have been handled through the cold chain could command a competitive price in the institutional market.

The refrigerated trucks (two 16-footer, one 10-footer and one 20-footer), costing about P8 million, will be plying the Benguet-Manila route. Their collective capacity is 10 tons per trip of mixed vegetables.
