Postharvest Losses In Rice and Corn Good news! After several years of postharvest interventions and combined efforts of both the government and private sectors, reduced postproduction losses have been obtained. Postharvest losses in rice and corn are now down to 15 and 13 percent, respectively. In the past, huge amounts of harvested grains are wasted because of bad weather condition, labor shortage, inefficiency of machine used, improper postharvest practices and lack of awareness on the part of the workers or handlers. Now, with modern postproduction technologies (like mechanical dryers), grain saving practices and a more enhanced awareness, postharvest losses are minimized. By sustaining reduction of these losses, farmers and traders would benefit in terms of profit. Consumers would enjoy bounty supply of food and feed, and as a desirable bonus, our country could be a grain exporter rather than importer.
